because you already know the likely answer and you do not want to confront an unpleasant reality?

Behavioral experts believe that "fear of uncertainty" is the biggest factor in suppressing one's feelings and self-determination. In which case, it is normal for people to succumb to this fear unless something is done to overcome it.

One way in overcoming this fear is confronting it. With regards to your question, it is better to just ask the question without even analyzing whether your answer will be the same or not.

Take care.

Hasn't everyone at some time? But lets be reasonable and honest, do we REALLY want to know? And if we do, are we ready for an answer that might not be the one we hoped for?

However, unless the person being asked pays your bills, or supports you in some other way, is their answer (even a negative one) so terrible? Terribly disappointing yes, hurtful, yes; but no matter what, you'll be okay.

I guess my point (finally!) is this: most questions we ask are no surprise to our family and friends. After all, if their as smart as we like to think, they've probably already figured out more than we like 'about us.' People aren't stupid, they just don't like confronting a truth that they might disagree with, and by asking for the "truth" from them (their truth - their opinion) you should try not to be combative, argumentative or pushy. Just say you want their opinion, but won't be hurt if they disagree. (Hard to do, but you've pushed reality in their face now, and sometimes it can get unpleasant).

As you said, you're a pretty good judge of this persons character and how they'll react. Just realize your life doesn't depend on their response to be happy!

yeah if it's an unusual question to people especially when I seriously asked it. I'm worried they might get it wrong without even comprehending my very point first. I believe that asking questions out of curiousity is good and healthy as long as it's done in a nice way and it's not anything too personal on someone. some people are just really too confident on reacting and think they know well enough without opening their minds first.

Oh yeah, and I see a lot of people on every forum in here who are asking about obvious stuff, just in the hopes someone has a miracle for them to chase the bad reality away - or even a credible lie to do it!

I would say it's more worry than fear. And I always ask it anyway, because I'd rather KNOW the truth for certain, even if it is unpleasant.

Yep, all the time. That's why I usually don't ask questions. When I DO, this exact thing happens.
