Everybody's right about people in general. But you're talking about children. Many children died in childbirth of course, but young ones were taken by diseases we don't even recognize anymore, like whooping cough or diptheria or smallpox, since vaccinations have pretty much wiped them out.

Dysentery was a very common cause of death to children.

There was also scarlet fever, cholera, and tuberculosis (called consumption then.)
