Your eating and exercise habits make a big difference. Stay away from caffeine the week before and during your period, drink lots of water, and plenty of healthy foods. Working out regularly, well I don't know how it helps, but I used to have really bad lower back cramps with lower abdomen cramps and someone told me to start working out and eating healthier, and to stay away from caffeine and sugars the week before and during, and it helped allot.
I also went to the Doc. and he gave me Naproxin, It's a really good pain med.
I got on birth control cause I got married last year, and ever since then I have only had maybe 2 cycles that had cramps with them...

i get the same type of thing and my doctor gave me some napro and and that was it. they became so bad i could barely walk. So i started taking preventative action before my period was due. The days before i would increase my physical activity as it loosens stomach muscles so id take two 1 hour walks a day, then i found some tablet called ponstan which are a great help and i take them the first 2 days of my period and they really just ease the pain down to slight discomfort instead of major cramps. also i know how bad it can be but sometmes keeping active during the painful stage can help in easing the strenght of the aches and pains.

I've found working out around that time of month and drinking lots of water will keep cramps and bloating to a minimum. Talk to a doctor if it really is crazy painful though-it shouldn't be; you might want to get checked out for endometriosis or fibroids-both cause unusually painful periods and should be diagnosed and watched and/or treated.

I'm not a lady :) but I'm only 13. I sometimes get them in my lower stomach. You can put a warm water bottle on it. That helps, or lay in the tub with warm water. Play relaxing music, and just relax and try to think about other things.

When I went on the pill, my cramps got so much better. I use to have them so bad, I passed out once. After taking the pill for a few months, I didn't even have cramps. talk to your doc.

If you are on the move, try one of the heating pads that you can stick on. They stay warm for about five hours and work for me every time.

Try getting your GYN to prescribe birth control pills. They usually help reduce the length of your period as well as the severity of your PMS symptoms (backache, cramps, etc.)
