The Transmission is a device that transmits power from the engine of a vehicle to other parts, from which it is eventually delivered to the wheels. The transmission is a major part of a system called the drive train, a series of devices that sends engine power to the wheels.
The transmission will (usually) use a series of gears to increase the amount of power (torque) while at the same time decreasing the amount of speed. This gear reduction is done to allow the vehicle to accelerate without requiring an extremely powerful engine to do so. Many transmission have multiple gears, and with each higher gear, the amount of speed reduction, and torque multiplication decreases. Most Transmissions also have a set of gears to allow for the reversal of the torque, so you can simply back the vehicle up.
