It is a blend of skill, luck, and salesmanship. It is my experience that your average creative has to be either really skilled, really lucky (and by that, it means being born in the right area, wanting to the make right art at the right time) or excellent salesman.

The most famous and wealthy artists are generally all three, with an emphasis on the salemanship part. Think of Picasso, Dali, Warhol ... Kinkade. (shudder)

Keep in mind there were quite a lot of famous and not wealthy artists that IMHO are better ... remember, Van Gogh sold one painting in his entire life - to his brother.

Finally, it is a big plus if you die. :)

I struggle with the same question every early morning when i get up. Its the first question on my mind when I wake and the first when I retire. I think the first and most important thing to do is compile a stock of work; a portfolio. Secondly, and possibly more importantly you have to find a way to sell your stuff. This is where I hit the snag because the very last thing I am is a salesman and due to the nature of who I am I am also not very wealthy so I cannot readily afford an agent or a studio. The best thing to do would be to live in a town where there is a good community of artists. From there you make connections with other artists and get help that way. If I had the money I would be helpful to other artists as well- I think most of us are if we have the means. I think the short answer is that we have to all stick together, man. The successful "poor" artists only found success by getting together in groups, making friends with beneficiaries, and creating an aura and a product to sell to the public. The sad truth is that we don't live in the year 1910 and this isn't Paris, we live in a world of greed where creative people are told that the must worship money and find a job where their skills can be used to make money for others (advertising). If you want to be really independantly wealthy you should look into a job in advertsiing or graphic design but it is very competative and cut-throat.

Art is like most other activities in life, business, acting, manufacturing, finance, philosophy architecture, etc. A very minuscule minority become famous and wealthy; most of the others just do it for the daily grind. If you only want to become an artist for the possible fame and cash, the best advice I can give you is to forget it because you'll just get frustrated (look up the meaning of 'frustrated' in your dictionary. If you paint or draw because you enjoy creating and eventually you sell a work, well, you'll feel great. If you're good and people appreciate what you do you might even create a local following. So long story short, if you don't enjoy it don't do it.

Luck. Plain and simple. May as well just play the lottery. Seriously. The vast majority of artists these days have day jobs.

i don't know, so much of the "famous" art these days i don't like, while the things i do like are ridiculed! i think it must be in the marketing, like actors and authors having agents.
