What are suggested guidelines for throwing old papers away?

I want to throw (old) once important papers away., What are suggested guidelines for saving important papers and where can I find them? For example: banking save for 5 years or never and throw out , paid bills 3 years etc....

Keep anything that has to do with your taxes for 7 years, 10 is better.

If they aren't important light a nice fire in the fire place and enjoy!
