Oh Dear, the world shall not be surprised in either case. As far as a woman being elected head of the state , countries in Europe, Asia, South America have long since elected . Surprise is why America is taking so long in electing women. It is even more surprising that no one even tried prior to Hillary. Why is it so?
As far as a Black man president of US may be some surprise because only a short time ago a video clipping showing some white policemen brutally assaulting one Black man was shown on the TV net works all around the world.
While most people in the world know, who Hillary Clinton is Obama is some one new and very few people may have come to know. The only others known among the candidates are Edwards and to a much lesser degree Rudy Giuliani, then Mayor of New York when the twin towers were hit. Infact the phrase 9/11 is more popular than him .

The world has had many woman presidents - including Muslim countries so suggestions that muslims will not accept one are simply ignorant -and many African presidents (apparently they do very well in Africa).
As for the US being ready - I was not aware this took preparation. Do we have to practice for a while first?
Of course we are ready - we are ready for whoever is elected president.
Those too bigotted to vote for one or the other are the ones with a problem - but I sincerely hope they make up a tiny minority.

We're just not ready for either of the current contenders. Clinton is a disaster of a woman. Her anything goes, shop til you drop it's ok we'll pay for it tomorrow, lets keep the peace and just ignore the elephant in the room kind of politics will destroy this country. Obama, I'm gonna say it again, is a closet muslim. He's and inarticulate, anti American, camera hound. Well when his dreams of presidency drown Oprah will set him up with his own talk show just like that quack Dr Phil,

Of course we are ready for an African American or woman president because all our presidents have been white men. So, it's about time we had more diverse presidents in the White House. If you want a more detailed explanation of why I think we should have a woman president, read my answer to this question:

People are ready - there have been a number of countries with black and female leaders and there are currently countries that have them as leaders. The world and the United States have been accepting of those leaders.
However, choosing a candidate based upon gender or skin-color is lame at best. If I say that I will vote for Candidate A because he is a white male and that's enough for me, its no different than simply voting for a female or Black. Gender and skin-color are not a pre-requiste to picking a candidate and shouldn't a consideration (but we all know they are).

Interesting question, because if Hillary or Obama aren't elected then the liberals are going to scream bloody murder about sexism and racism and completely ignore some of the asinine positions they may have taken on the issues. That said, I think that Americans would elect a woman or an African American or an African American Woman if they were right on the issues.

I dont think the color of someone's skin or gender should matter in who deserves to be the president of the United States.
Unfortunately, it's only in the USA where people think this is a really tough question.
