Are you really surprised there was no bench clearing brawl? I cannot remember the last one, it has been so long. It's been years for sure.

So, my question is- When was the last bench clearing brawl in the NHL?

Yeah Mike, nobody left the bench for the Ottawa-Buffalo one.

Lity.....that Philly/Ottawa game didn't have any bench clearers. Just the guys on the ice for each faceoff would brawl but no one ever came off the bench. John LeClair, Mark Recchi, and Michael Handzus even fought in that game.

I was waiting for it the whole game man. You said you didn't watch the game huh? Man you missed out. The atmosphere in the building was great. And boy did it get chippy. I mean really chippy. There were scrums after every stoppage of play. I haven't seen players look at each other with such genuine hatred in a while. Sucks the Pens lost. It will be a hella-fun playoff series if it comes to that.

The last bench clearer? I think that last year's Buffalo/Ottawa brawl could be classified as one, even though the whole bench didn't really clear. Even the goalies fought! That's the closest I can think of.

Yeah, well, that's the only one I can come up with, lol.

LITY: I think I remember that game! I can't believe I didn't think of it! They were showing it all over SportsCenter back when ESPN cared lol.

It has been many years since they instituted the instigator penalty. I am surprised, considering the performance of the officiating crew in tonight's game between PIT & Phily. Yeah, the bulk of the penalties happen after the 2nd period & the Pens were frustrated, but it could have & should have gotten out of line. A bench clearing brawl tonight may have open some eyes tothe poor officiating in hockey. The flyers 3rd goal came on a offsides call blown! Only in hockey!

Bob, your're right. No bench clearing brawl in the Sabres-Sens game. Would've been fun though.

I'm not sure when the last one was, but I don't think there will be another one.

Ottawa at Philadelphia
at 18:21 of the 3rd period, all the players were on the ice...7 Senators were penalized, and 8 Flyers

after order was restored, at 18:45 of the 3rd period
several other players penalized

after order was restored
Sharp and Spezza decided to test out fighting (20% of Spezza's career penalty minutes came at 18:47 of the 3rd period)

In fact, Spezza has been in 2 fights in his NHL career.........and the 52 minutes account for almost 30% of his PIM

Had that been their last (8th) meeting of the season and there were no playoff implications, it would have been a bench clearing melee...still lots of hockey between those two and it just warming up.
