We received a notice in our box without an envelope, not stamped and it had been placed into our mailbox without going through the USPS. Is this legal, and if not, where can we find the documentation stating so?

Anything placed in a mailbox by anyone other than an employee of the US Post office is illegal

even if you buy the box... the space inside is the property of the government... that is for YOUR protection..... I detours people from going through others mail...

if someone was dropping of a schedule for carpoolong and noticed that you have received a leter from an oncologist bankruptcy court, various magazines we hope noone knows we get or an HIV clinic, then your privacy is violated. If you have a box with a space for a newspaper the that is a better choice...

I'm a carrier and I've taken letters out of a box thinking they were going out when realy someone tossed it in the box with letters to be mailed.

It is illegal to put anything not mail in a mailbox. See the cite below for the more complicated answer.

The mailbox can be used for notices as long as you are the recipient.

No, it is illegal.
The post office seems to think that YOUR mailbox, on YOUR property, is theirs.

Typical government workers.

the mailbox is considered gov property and nothing but mail can it be used for.
