From 'Christianity Today':

"...in 2001, the group (ACLU) interceded with a school district in Michigan that had deleted a high school senior's yearbook entry because she included a Bible verse. In 2002, the ACLU filed a brief on behalf of a pastor associated with Operation Rescue who was prevented from participating in a parade because his pro-life poster showed a photograph of an aborted baby. And last September, the organization joined a lawsuit on behalf of a New Jersey second-grader who was not allowed to sing "Awesome God" in a school talent show."

Looks like the ACLU takes Jesus' admonition to turn the other cheek seriously by defending a group that slurs them any and every chance they get.

Does that make the ACLU better Christians than the people they are defending in these instances?

Yes, even though I disagree with the opinions expressed by the people in the examples, they DO have the right to express their opinions. And the ACLU does the best job of anybody of protecting people's civil rights.

Funny how the right-wingers hate the ACLU....until they need them.

30 years ago the ACLU was fighting for the rights of blacks would were being discriminated against. They perform this kind of work nowadays all the time but, sometimes one of the local chapters does sometihg weird and the media will only print odd news like the situations you mentioned.
Join the ACLU and make your voice heard! I'm a member. There is much discrimination still going on and the government isn't helping people who need help. If the "average" American like you doesn't join, then the ACLU will be just full of gays and lesbians.

Should we go on supporting the NRA--even though their Republican candidates and supporters continue to accuse Democrats and liberals of wanting to get rid of our rights to own a gun?

It's easy to point to one specific issue and attack the bearer based on that one case. But the ACLU has been a pivotal and instrumental cause in the advancement of civil rights, liberties, and freedom for all--regardless of class and gender.

And no matter what it does, it will continue to function as a bastion in today's dark world of politics.

Whether you like it or not.

I am REALLY sorry! I misread the article. Please excuse my previous post, for those who read it. I now understand that the ACLU and I are in agreement on this case! Of course society should support the ACLU's defense of these people and their civil rights! I am so glad the ACLU is fighting against the absurdity that's going on in our country, the suppression of civil rights like freedom of speech and the perversion of the meaning of separation of church and state! I've always wanted to see these problems solved and I'm glad the ACLU is taking real action! GO ACLU!

I have never understood why these people feel a need to thrust thier religon out there but it is thier right so yes we should support the ACLU fighting for it.
Thanks for these examples as they help demonstrate the idiocy of those claiming the ACLU is anti religous.

In doing the above, the ACLU is being consistent with its mission statement.

See it here: http://www.aclu.org/about/index.html

On whether or not society should support the efforts of the ACLU in the above cases, I can only say this: they are like all of these sorts of groups. Financial support is all they require. Everything else is secondary.

This is why they exist, and I as always believe in the cause of the ACLU.

the ACLU takes more rights and freedoms away from people and groups than the Patriot act. These if true are rare occurrences. The exception rather than the norm.
