After a recent power outage, my hp pavilion takes a really long time to start up; It waits at the starting hp screen for around 3 minutes, then it changes to black for around 1 minute before the screen that says Window is starting up, or something like that.
What wrong?

Thanks everyone who replied. I had a surge protector which was supposed to keep anything from being fried (at least I think so), but after the power outage, it kept on making a beeping sound. The power outage happened once in the evening, so I turned the surge protector off to stop the beeping, and the surge protector back on when the power came on (but I didn't open the computer). But then the power went out again in the morning, and I was in bed, so I just let it keep beeping until it stopped. Maybe something got fried then. I've already booted the computer up more than once since then, and it does the same thing (slow hp screen) every time. I haven't opened it up yet, but I plan to run system mechanic on it tonight to check the hard drive.

on about the fifth time it started, it was normal speed, so I never knew what was wrong, but I guess this might have been it.

What it SHOULD be doing is running an integrity test on your hard-drive to make sure there were no damaged sectors. It should be okay once it's been done the one time.

It may have been trying to retrieve the last thing you were working on, any quick-saves from documents etc. - some computers have that feature automatically.

A component in the system might have been compromised. If it eventually boots, check the operation of all your drives. It's possible that maybe the CD/DVD or other component got fried and it slowing down the boot process.

Many years ago, I had a socket 7 on a network. I saw lightning shoot out of the outlet, fry my back-up and my socket was scorched, even though the pc ran. I played with it for months before I called it quits. It worked, it was just really slow. I replaced the MB and upgraded.

It is possible that the computer may have had the RAM partially fried, check the inside of the computer and make sure everything looks normal (if it's burnt it may have black edges).
