I don't think religion has any place in it, people always think that the religion itself says what people do- a lot of times the people are really misinformed and if someone in power who is corrupt (which is usually the case in countries with a high number of Muslims, as there is a very small amount that have wealth and an uneven distribution of the poor) says to do something, people blindly follow they're instructions, not even bothering to read the Qu'ran (in many cases they can't even read). For example, when the iPod first came out, people saw that "iPod = popular" and people blindly bought the iPod not really looking around at other mp3 players. Also think about in various schools, how much a popular person can influence the minds and behavior of other students.

THAT SAID, regardless of religion, this person needs to be punished (either rot in jail, or something more severe).

I think that it is sad that he resorted to violence. I know that not all muslim's are this way. I find it sad that we judge an entire religion based off a few who do horrible things in the name of God. Christians can be considered the same sometimes. We killed indians and other civilizations because they were savages.
Killing in the name of a religion is wrong and sadly enough it is done far to often.

I think that the women of those countries should have more of a say in their lives

Anyone who answers this question would do well to read the original news report out of Toronto. The point is that the Muslim religion while not teaching this kind of brutal oppression of women does passively condone a philosophy of womens' subservience to men which is exemplified in the dress and conduct code and the sense of family dishonour - reflected on the male family members - if a female dosobeys or chooses to go her own way. Revenge killings such as this one are unfortunately not uncommon. And with a minority of muslims in western countries actively campaigning for Sharia law it is a social problem we should be very concerned about, especially when we preach to other countries about human rights and cannot keep our own house in order. Muslim communities in western countries have to understand that this kind of barbarity will not be tolerated and much more assistance should be given to muslim womens' organisations who are actively fighting it in their own communities.

Since you put this in the anthro section I suppose you want some answer in that train of thought. Well, It goes against nature overall to kill your own young. It goes against survival of the fittest because a creature that kills its own young is not thinking in a way that promotes survival. This has happened because of faulty manmade rules, rules that are suppose to be acquired from divine sources but divine sources would not go against nature since nature gave man the basic first rule of survival. Man being an aware animal realizes that there must be some rules concerning sex because of diseases. This is an enhanced rule over nature because nature seems to imply unlimited sexual activity and man has awareness to control nature and thus promote survival. This example has shown an extreme provision to that rule and extremes usually go to the opposite of the orginal intended rule. Thus it is what you may say stupid.

I don't think that girls at that age can make their own decisions. But I think that what he did for her is brutal, inhumane and ugly. If he wanted her to do something he should have talked to her, reasoned with her. If he is convinced that hijab is the right thing for her he could have constructed a civilized argument. These ppl however, follow religion blindly without having any clue what they r going to do with it. This is soo sad!
