how can i get the text to change color on a mouse click in a powerpoint custom animation?

copy the slide. Then change the color on the second slide. When you click it will go to the next slide and appear that only the color change.
Just remember not to use a transition so that it looks like only the color changed.

R U Serious has a good approach. Another is to copy the text box and change the text color. Give the box on top a custom exit animation such as a dissolve, then put it directly on top of the original text.

Select one of the items and set it to appear when you click Then select each on the other items and set them to "Start with Previous Item" When you click to open the first item, all the rest will appear at the same time. Or, you can hold down the ctrl key and click on all the items until you have everything you want to appear at once select. Then right-click on any of them and select "Group" form the menu. This will allow you to group them all together as a single item. Then you simply set that group to appear when you click.
