This came on the heels of watching a documentary by Aaron Russo alleging that taxes are unconstitutional and that there is no written law that says taxes must be paid. I'm curious to know what your opinions are.

If you could all be a little more specific, I would appreciate it. What inconsistencies and where in Title 26?

matthew: I am certainly no expert with legalese, but from what I can gather, the code you directed me to is in regards to corporations. Am I missing something? (Not saying I'm not, just am not sure.)

Whether is it legal or not, I have seen people go to jail for this. I knew a father and son who honestly thought they did not have to pay taxes. The IRS took them to court. Despite pleading their case, they still got 5 years in prison. After being released, they did not learn their lesson, they swore that they were held not for tax evasion but because they were political prisoners (Afterall, the government would go bankrupt if everybody found out).
So even if Aaron Russo is right, you can still go to jail for not paying your taxes.

Aaron Russo is an idiot. No, make that IDIOT. Yeah, that's better.
The law is Title 26 of the US Code. Google it if you wish to read it.
Addendum: Matthew gave you a proper reference. If you actually READ 6012 you would have seen the following:
"(a) General rule
Returns with respect to income taxes under subtitle A shall be made by the following:
(1)
(A) Every INDIVIDUAL having for the taxable year gross income which equals or exceeds the exemption amount....." (emphasis on INDIVIDUAL mine, so you couldn't miss it)
An INDIVIDUAL is NOT a corporation. It is a "natural person" like you or I.
If you're not up on the legalese, hire an attorney or go to law school.

Russo's film is filled with many inaccuracies and inconsistencies and many places where he reaches a conclusion based on incorrect assumptions.
Before he died last summer, he owed the feds and California millions of dollars in back taxes. He was hoping that his film would start a huge groundswell against the IRS. Alas, it was not to be. Now is heirs are stuck cleaning up his tax mess.

THINGS I DIDN'T KNOW UNTIL I SAW THEM ON THE INTERNET:
Nobody ever really landed on the moon - it was a giant hoax. What you saw on TV was filmed in Utah.
Elvis is still alive, and performing marriage ceremonies in Las Vegas.
It is unconstitutional for the government to tax your wages (income tax), and most of what we think of as income isn't really income anyway.
Excuse me now....I just won 2 million pounds in the online UK lottery when my email was randomly selected, and I have to go answer the email.....

The legal obligation to file Federal tax returns in general is imposed under 26 U.S.C. § 6011. The more specific legal obligation to file Federal income tax returns is imposed under 26 U.S.C. § 6012.
How that for specific!!

If the fact that they system has been in place and functioning and passing muster with the supreme court for over 80 years isn't enough to convince you they you are suffering from oxygen deprivation.
