Private universities can do what they want. But race-based admission criteria is pointless since the concept of biological "races" is BS.
As I said in response to other questions-
Race is a valid social concept. But, as a scientific classification, it only applies to other species. To suggest otherwise is to be of the opinion that the Homo-sapien species can be divided into sub-species, which it cannot. The false logic of race as a taxonomic concept was introduced for the sole purpose of division- to create hatred (i.e. so called "racism") between people who actually differ more from those within their own imaginary biological races than they do from those of others.
Translation- We can divide ourselves according to culture, nationality, etc... and group these differences together according to "race". This is a logical concept. In other words, it's within the nature of logic to refer to different cultures, nationalities, etc... as different races.
However, biologically speaking, to group people together according to race is the same as saying that there are sub-species of humans- But there are NOT enough biological differences between the so-called races to consider them separate and readily distinguishable races. If the opposite was true then there would, in fact, exist sub-species of the Homo-sapien. (NOTICE that I said, "...aren't ENOUGH differences." Only an idiot would claim that there aren't ANY differences between people. However, as I said, there aren't ENOUGH differences to determine that there are sub-species of humans. There are genetic differences between Calico and Tabby cats, for example; but that doesn't change the fact that Calicoes and Tabbies are NOT sub-species of the Felis-catus. Understand my point?)
The idea of biological races was introduced for the purpose of division. I don't know how else to word that other than to say that people wanted us to embrace the idea of biological race so that we would buy into the fallacy of racial superiority and inferiority.

Surely you are aware of the fact that they already do.There's virtually no High School in America that dosent offer 'Black' and 'Hispanic'-only scholarships.Other answers talked about Yale and Harvard, but 99% of WHITE people can't attend either of those schools, either. They are schools set aside for the 1%ers,the elite who have been running things since day 1,the elite who, through their' representative George W.,have been sacking and pillaging this country at unpressedented rates over the last few years.
I digress, forgive me.'Affermative Action' has made race and gender a part of EVERY school's admissions criteria.DON'T get it twisted,I'm NOT a racist,right-winging nut,in fact,I'm the opposite in a lot of ways. But I just have this analogy to drop regarding university admission;when your' 1 year old baby is first able to start digesting solid food,he or she dosen't have the fine-motor skills nessesary to operate a fork or spoon. So,you do it for them. After an amount of time passes, you start to let them feed themselves. It's messy at first, but it gets better.Eventually, the child is able to do it,even if he or she got mad at you for not doing it for them on occasion during the learning(assimilation)process.
This is where race/(and,to a much, much lesser extent)gender-based university admissions are now. Many of these Minority-only scholarships have been in place for over 25-30 years now,and whites still go to and finish college at over twice the rate of other races, despite having LESS scholarship opprotunity. To fill the minority quota, some schools 'dumb-down' the academic requirements so that scholarship recipients can keep up.
It's time to end admissions based on race, ethnicity and gender.Doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, police, all the people that are sopposed to be professionally trained, are screwing up at UNPRESIDENTED rates, primarily because of down-graded requirements forced by quotas!
Jim Crow is dead. There is'nt a school,a restaurant,a nightclub,a water fountain,an outhouse in the hills of Tennessee, that are only for whites, and noone else. Those things were ugly when they existed, but THEY DON'T ANYMORE.
The child needs to be taught to either learn to use the spoon,or starve.Half-[donkey]ing it won't do anymore.Any parent who keeps spoon-feeding their' child past a certain age is doing that child a diserviceThe child might cry at first, but it's got to learn to do this for itself, and do it right. That's what love is all about.
Embrace humankind.End Affermative Action.Let's make 'Merit' our unifying requierment.

Race, Ethnicity, and Gender should have no bearing AT ALL on ANY type of consideration...
Not for University, not for Employment... NOTHING.
"Quotas" only make people more dependant upon the system... If you know that you need to fight just as hard as everyone else to reach your goal you and those around you will get more out of reaching the goal then if you are given or perceived as being given your prize without merit.
Praise and achievements are to be Earned!
The whole American Concept of “Everyone gets a trophy just for showing up” has caused a LOT of damage to our people and our culture as a whole… Failure happens when you don’t live up to expectations… Yeah, it may hurt your inner-child to get turned down for something but our first instinct shouldn’t be to SUE.
Failure is supposed to be a LEARNING EXPERIENCE. If I fail at something I am supposed to learn what I can do to prevent such failures in the future so that I can try harder the next time.
If I am given something because I’m a woman, or disabled, or because of the color of my skin then I will be stunted in my mental and emotional growth.
If I get a 4.0 grade point average that alone should be why I get ANYTHING… It doesn’t matter if my name is Sally, John, Sakura, or Tomkia!
NO ONE should get a job or a slot at a University because they need a Token Student or Employee… That does no good for the Company/University and it does no good for the person that is chosen because they “need” a face like their in the register.
It continues the apathy in the minority community that has stopped the advancement of so many people… It provides a sense of “Why should I have to WORK when I will be GIVEN what want?” This apathy has lead to the multi-generational Welfare System that we have today…
But forget about race for a second… Look at human history as a whole… I don’t care if you are black, Mexican, or an albino midget… If you are MALE then you will have an easier time on this planet then a female.
Females of ALL races, colors, shapes, and sizes have been abused and repressed for a majority of history.
Black MALES think that they have had a hard time in the eyes of history? I don’t think so… Look at what is being done to Black Females over in Africa RIGHT NOW and you will see that your perceived hardships are NOTHING compared to the average African Woman. Just look at Female circumcision! This is an evil that we are ONLY NOW beginning to raise awareness of in the west.
Women have been chained to the hearth in every culture… Perceived as “Baby Machines”… There was actually a time when men were convinced that if you educate a woman you will make her infertile… Kept as dumb as sheep so that they would remain docile…
If ANYONE needs consideration it is the women of this planet… But even then… Giving us accomplishments and awards unearned will only damage our quest for TRUE EQUALITY!
Sorry for bouncing around so much but I am REALLY tired… But I really wanted to get my two cents in before I crashed for the night!

As a black college student I would much rather like it if college admission were not based on race. I was accepted into every school I applied for except for one, including Madison, Purdue, and the U of Minnesota, but since I'm black many people believe that I was admitted solely on my race, which is not the case. I graduated in the top 10% of my class, scored a 28 on my ACT, but simple because I'm black people believe I a received a "free pass". Not the case. I had to work my a** off to get to where I am today. I receive three different scholarship, only one of which was based off of my race. I would much rather not have people pity me but yet understand that I am where I am today because of my achievements. If anything I think that financial need should play a big role, for whites blacks, Mexicans, and everybody else equally. I say this because I know that if it were not for scholarships and financial aid I would not have been able to afford college.

Universities should never base admission on any of these.
Everyone should be allowed to go to the college of their dreams. Those days of predujice are gone and over for good.
If anything, universities should allow poverty stricken kids to get in. It seems only the wealthy get in.
Getting grants is not an easy thing.
Equal rights should always be in play ..... We are the only place in the universe who has the freedom to enjoy what is out there and we need to keep this way..

NO! That is so wrong and completely unfair. A decision like this should not be determined by an individuals oppinion on whether or not that person should go to that school.
It should be based upon that person's hard work, potential, skills. I find it incredibly shallow and deceiving when people offer a fair chance, when in reality, they are being cheated.

People often seem to think of the world's people as if they can be divided up into three main groups: white, black and yellow. In fact, scientists say it's nonsense because things are really not that simple.
The idea that Africa has only very dark skinned black people ignores the fact that there are many with lighter skins north of the Sahara desert. It also ignores the fact that people from different parts of Africa (while they might all have dark skin) look very different from each other in other ways.
Another example that the 'three different types of people' idea doesn't work is with people from around India. They have dark skin (though it's much lighter in the north, and people in the northern mountains often have blue eyes too) but their faces are very different from Africans. Then there's Australians, who have dark skin but hair like Europeans and Indians. As for Europe, many people in Spain look pretty much like people from north Africa, some Italians are blond and some Norwegians are dark. Confused? Exactly. Genetic differences between people do not fit into neat little boxes that match up to countries. There are no 'pure breeds' of human beings, just lots of blurred edges.
Many people think that people with similar colour skin have similar characteristics. A common example is the achievement of black sportsmen and women and their 'natural rhythm' on the dance floor. This has less to do with biology and more to do with society: black people are not born naturally better at sport and dancing.
Even amongst groups who look pretty much the same, they often have as many genetic differences amongst themselves as they do with some people who look completely different. 'Race' is only skin deep. "

Well - it depends on whether the university feels that a diverse student body is an asset. I personally think it is. That being said - many Ivy league schools have points systems where points are granted for having parents that went to the school or large donations being made to the school. Due to our countries history most of these people are white. And since the name of the schools alone predict some level of inevitability regarding the person future. (for example George Bush at Yale) then yes - I think schools should equally make an effort to recruit qualified women and minority groups.
