I took my 98 GMC Jimmy in to get the a/c serviced. The dealer said it needed a whole new a/c compressor. He quoted me 1800 parts and labor. What is this part about? Thanks

That is too high for just a compressor. The parts would be ~ 700, and labor 300-400... I had the compressor and accumlator on my 97 GMC replaced and I was out the door at $1000.

The compressor is part of the air conditioning system. It pumps freon through the A/C system to provide you with cold air during the summer, and to dry the humid air inside the cab during the winter when your defroster is on.

Like Herman said. More info, it's under the hood, attached to the engine, driven by a belt, and a major part of your a/c. It is expensive to replace, 1800 sounds like a lot, I'd get a couple of quotes from different mechanics. Ask friends, coworkers who they trust if you don't have a trusted mechanic.

It's the part that makes the air cold. You have to have it if you want air conditioning. I'd get a second opinion, though--$1800 seems a bit on the high side for that.

AC don't blow cold without it!! However you may be able to get it fixed a little cheaper by shopping around. Just make sure you go to a reputable shop.
