i have two Sunburst Platy. three weeks ago i noticed the bigger one fighting with the smaller. now the smaller one just sits on the bottom of the tank. it swims occationally, but not normal. it does not swim level, rather the head stays high and the tail low. and when it stops swimming it sinks. i've seperated the two fish. the bigger fish stays close by on the other side...essentially waiting. its pretty sad.

i'm thinking a fin or fins were damaged.

do you think this seperation will rest the fish enough to swim again?

The exact same thing happened with my Mollies. The big female molly was constantly abusing the small male molly. The small male molly was actually on the verge of dying as a result of the abuse. He was lying down on his head without moving at all. I took him out of the tank for a day and kept him in a small bowl. One day later, he fully recovered and was back swimming in the tank. I also added new fish to the tank as well. Adding new fish made the female molly stop focusing on the small molly. My suggestion is to get more platties and to keep the small platy by itself until it fully recovers.

I'll tell you what, my brother had a very similar situation, two platys in a community tank. One always harassed and abused the other. Finally, one day, the abusee was pretty beat up, his fins all mangled. My brother got mad and flushed the abuser.

Over the next few weeks, the abusee recovered. Oh, how nice..... sike.... the abusee became the abuser. He started harassing and attacking the other fish and killed one of his fish. My brother really blew a gasket then and flushed that platy too.

Some fish just weren't meant to live peacefully in a quiet community (tank).

Hey thats sad what happened but dont take measures like removing the bully completly.. Keep the injured guy in isolation till he recovers and then put him back.. Till that time arrage for a good hiding place for the small guy.. They are fish and yes they do fight sometimes.. Nothing you can do about it but you can certainly even the odds by giving the little guy ample space to hide when under attack.. It works..

only time will tell, but i would also put the injured fish in shallower water with a small flow of air thru a bubbler...add a very small amount of aquarium salt...this will help in the healing process. the shallow water helps the fish by lessening the pressure on the swim bladder and will help him regain his balance. make the surface of the water in the container you have the injured fish in about one inch above the fish's head. if the other fish hit this one in the head to hard, it may be "brain" damaged, and may not recover.
