Hi I was wondering whats the purpose of an air cleaner and does it increase power? Also does it usually require hood modifications?

P.S - I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT AN AIR FILTER. I AM TALKING ABOUT THE AIR CLEANERS YOU SEE ON TOP OF AN ENGINE THAT STICK OUT

HERE IS A PICTURE OF WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT -

The air cleaner and air filter are the same - they perform the same thing by separating the impurities( sand - dust etc.) from entering the manifold and mixes with the fuel for better combustion. Impurities will cause fouling -rough idle etc.

The air cleaner in the picture is an air filter that is more open to the outside air. It cleans, or filters, the air entering the engine. Most cars with carburetors use air filters/cleaners that look like this one, but most of them would have come from the factory in a housing that would hide the edges of the filter. This is a picture of an air filter/cleaner in a stock housing http://www.fordification.com/board/airfilter-assy_72F250.jpg

You might see a slight power bump from the use of an open air filter housing due to the increased air flow. This kind of housing causes rough starts in cold weather.

Most filter housings like the one in your picture are approximately the same size as the OEM housing, and would not need any modifications. If you used a larger housing, then you might need to modify the hood.

It IS air filter. Just a different kind than installed at the factory. Purpose - just like the name suggests - to clean air. Advantage over stock - none.

Gonna choose a sprint greater tips, please. the only "air cleaners" i will think of of that "stick out" may be a crankcase breather tube, yet returned, i'm guessing. Ah, now I understand! "hi-stacks", commonly fastened on good of a supercharger (or "blower", by using fact the term implies). same purpose, to bathe the air of dirt and particulates before it enters the supercharger or intake manifold.
