Because it was the right thing to do. The tapes were made by the CIA to monitor interrogations to ensure that no wrong doings occurred, to use them as evidence if they were, and for training purposes. Those needs were met and they no longer had use to the CIA. Good management practice dictates that they be destroyed in stead of taking up space better used with whatever. Some lower ranking officials felt it might be prudent to keep them but the boss, as is his job, made the decision to destroy them. They were not part of any investigation (that was a completely different set of tapes).
Bottom line: this is yet another example of a half truth being used for political purposes as is so common in Washington, DC.

They weren't fired because they did exactly what the Bush administration wanted them to do.
They destroyed evidence of crimes committed by the Bush administration.
The courts had been trying to get the tapes for years.
The White House wouldn't say to keep them, but they wouldn't say to destroy them either.
With a wink and a nod, the tapes were destroyed just like the White House wanted.
Then the CIA came up with the lame *** excuse about outing agents.
Remember Valerie Plame?
The Bush administration is all about outing CIA agents as long as they get to have their wars.

The destruction of the tapes was performed AFTER the courts wanted to review it, not before, as was on the news a few days ago.
What they did is called "contempt of court" and the penalties for that are not just getting fired.

Great question! I think it is because those involved are above the law. At least they are being treated like they are, and no one seems to be caring. If we have heard about it at all we can bet there's a lot more of this being done than just this. If you see one rat you know there's a passel. To me this is not what the United States of America is all about, and everyone involved should be prosecuted. How can we be proud of our leaders if they condone such barbaric methods? And how can we defend ourselves to other nations, or pretend that we are so righteous when we are so obviously not.

They did us a favor. Sooner or later some liberal judge would of ordered them to the press, and I'm sure they would play well in Pakistan.

You must not understand the current administration very well.
There's no reason for doing anything lawfully when it's so much more dramatic to just say, "We wrote the Constitution, so we'll interpret it as we want to."

Well, for starters, because it wasn't illegal to destroy the tapes that would've exposed the CIA operatives.
Also, do you remember when you Liberals were crying when Valerie Plains (I believe her name) info. was "leaked?" Now it's ok to do that?
Double standards, the liberal way.
