a solitare is a single stone/style of mounting for gemstones. it can be a diamond, it can also be any other stone from a sapphire to an emerald. But ordinarily it is one stone set on a metal band. no other embellishments or additional stones. i have a solitare sapphire.

A diamond is a type of gemstone. it can be set in a solitare setting, or it can be done with side stones (called baguettes), channel set, etc.
