I am looking to buy my first car and am trying to decide between a Ford Ranger and a Chevy S10. I would apprecaite the pros and cons of both and an opinion of which looks cooler. What ever I get I want an extended cab, a style side (not a stepside), maybe 4x4, year 1998+, with around an $8,000 dollar budget. Plus I am not looking for an Extreme package on the S10 but would not mind the Edge package on the Ranger. I later look to add a 4-6" lift with bigger tires and wheels. Tell me what I should get. Good answers that help me out will get some easy points!!!

Without knowing your financial situation, it would be difficult to say. You might consider a chevy colorado or gmc canyon. They replaced the S-10 with a heavier frame and better suspension and a much healthier engine-3.5 5 cyl. more power and decent gas mileage. As for the Ranger, they are decent trucks also. Really it depends on what you want to do with it. As for the lift kit and larger tires unless you do alot of off roading all it will do is beat you to pieces on the highway and burn more gas. If you want an older model, I'd probably for with the Ranger with a larger engine.

The Ford ranger is what i would go with between these two. the fords interior is a little nicer and i definitly think its more truck like looking the 98ish S10 is not something i would consider good looking with a truck body but car like front fascia. If you are not apposed to foreign cars i like the Toyota Tacoma it is already slightly higher with larger tires it may save you some money on the lift kit (although it is not like a 6" lift ). Also if you do a lift and larger tires make sure you get the largest engine you can afford as when you put the larger tires and lift on a small 4 cyl will feel very underpowered. For an off road truck i would get a V6 Tacoma and put a lift and tires on that.

I had a 96 Ranger ext. cab and traded it in for a 01 Chevy s-10 ext. cab.

The s-10 has more interior room. I have also found that dress up itmes are more available and seem to be less expensive for the s-10.

If you go for an s-10, make sure you look for one with the 4.3 ltr motor. It seems to me it has a bit more power than the 4.0 in some of the rangers.

Other than that, test drive both and see what works for you.

Good luck

I would go with the Chevy S10, but that is mostly because I am a huge Chevy fan... but also because I think it's a very nice looking truck & reliable!
