Beacuse the players with single digit numbers got the lower berth on the train.

I read somewhere that there was a real practical reason for it- the Red wings assigned the better seats on the train to those with the lower numbers.

If that's true, then it was just for a better seat. Looking at some of the numbers on Detroits roster now, that's not true anymore (plane now anyways) Unless it's reverse order.

I guess Howe just liked the #9. However, he was often compared to Maurice "Rocket" Richard, who also wore number 9.
