i need to know what this coin is worth. my son wants it and if it is anything over $500 i wont give it to him? what is it worth?

A medal from the 1876 centennial can be worth anywhere from $10 to the $500 you state. A gold medal from then would be in that high price range. Most medals from that time sell for $25-$100 if in bronze or silver and have a good size to them, like at least 1 1/2 inches. This is the best I can do for there are no price guides around. With eBay around one can now check on what an item is going for bid wise. That is if their item is on the auction block. On line action have helped make a value for medals and tokens, as long as the person selling is honest about grade and the photo is correct. this is the best I can do without seeing it. Coin dealers usually know very little about medals and tokens so won't be a help to you. They will offer to little.
