The magnitude of earthquakes in Richter scale will tell you the energy release at the point of focus only. It is not connected directly with destruction's.There are several other factors like type of buildings, its natural frequency relation with earthquakes frequency, distance from epicenter and geographical condition like several factors decides the amount of destruction. The amount of destruction is directly connected with Mercalli scale only. Please see the chart for energy release equal to TNT for Richter scale. No 8 is heavy and 9 is very heavy.
Approximate TNT (Tri nitro telecom ) Yield for Seismic Energy
Richter scale Energy release equal TNT.
1 30 lbs
2. 1 ton
3. 29 ton
4. 1000 ton
5. 32000 ton
6. 1 million ton
7. 32 million ton
8. 1 billion ton
9. 32 billion ton
10 1 trillion ton.

Well, those are violent ratings and can knock down electrical wires and spark and cause a fire. They can make it look like a city went into a giant blender. They can also make every wall near the earthquake fall down. They can many people die but how would you survive them? Just by being prepared when they're going to happen any time.

They can snap telephone poles and uproot trees. Instead of magnatude, the effects are measured on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. Here is a summary of the types of damage from quakes:

Major damage to a all structures in area, minor damage at considerable distance, minor damage to major structures at distant location--can't remember the miles but that would be variable any way.

Serious injuries and fatalities closest to the epicenter.

just figure they'll have to rebuild everything, if it hit the center of town. After they find the people, if any are left.

It won't be a total killer. But no fatalities would be miraculous.

Its not EQs that kill people, its the stuff that falls on them that kills them.
