HP makes great, durable laptops.
Dell makes good laptops too. But if they were perfect I would not be fixing them all the time.
Don't be fooled by their service contract. Getting Dell to fulfill their side of the bargain can be quite difficult. That is why there is a multi-million dollar law suit against them...among other reasons.

I've been considering a laptop from Dell myself, and I just decided on the Dell XPS M1330. It's thin and light, but not too small. Plus it's powerful enough for everyday use and has a lovely screen.

the 'best' is really a matter of opinion. Dell's are certainly one of the more popular brands and are actually pretty durable. while of course you can get the defective one, they are a pretty good brand for laptops for their prices. the best laptop you can buy is the one that has the best of everything. and im sure Dell doesnt have that.
