Some of my cousins are Chinese or part Chinese. Will people be nice to him in the south? Remember it is a guy not a girl. A girl is a whom different story. Apparently less a threat.

sad thing is you all view every Chinese are a foreigner who can't assimulate. he's american as any other. isn't it sad that he could have been a 6 generation american, yet viewed as less of one than a new Swedish immigrant? that says something don't it. the italians and irish are doing fine, but the chinese are still behind in being accepted. so sad.

I would, yes; I'm not American, though, I'm an Aussie. American southerners have a reputation for being intolerant, but this is perhaps not so much the case as of late. As in any cross-section of society, there are good and bad elements.

Good luck to your cousin!

Yes I feel we will be, mind you I live in Kentucky so we are kinda both South and North. I know that around here most all would be nice and polite to him as long as he was nice and polite. While we can be very nice, we expect the same in return. If one does something that is rude or out of line we can be very, very mean. Yet if one is nice, friendly then we can also become best of friends. While I can not speak for every Southerner, I can say that many are very nice and will treat him fine. You are right to a degree about women being different. Yet I can tell you in the South we really don't care if it's a man or a woman if they are rude or in anyway mean and so on, we can be very hostile. I would say he will be fine. Yeah there are some jackasses, but they are everywhere South and North. So I would be willing to bet he will be fine. We actually are a little more patient with people how have an accent or do not speak English very well than people up North. At lest that is what I have seen.

This is a very baffling question. Why do you think this person would be treated any worse in the south than in New York. Racism is everywhere in one form or fashion. I live in the south, and have friends from the north that say there was horrible racism where they came from, against many nationalities. Do people from the north find it comforting to point fingers elsewhere in order to hide the problems in their own neighborhoods? Not picking on the northern US, but this is 2007, and the racism that still exists in this country is not confined to the south, or even higher there percentage wise.

I don't see why I would treat him any differently than anyone else. Lol, as far as I know, your average southerner isn't racist against the Chinese. I should know, living in the south. Waaaay south. A person who treats others differently because of race just has nothing better to do with his life.

We have a few Chinese in our area, they are very nice people , and my youngest son was married to a Chinese girl, She is no longer married to him, but she keeps in touch with us. I do feel that it is good if they are going to live in America, that they become Americans. I don't think that they should lose there Chinese Culture all together, nor lose their language, but learning to speak american goes a long way, in how people except or reject you. And there are a lot of Chinese in the South, he will not be to out of context.

Is he into the art of Bonsai or for the Chinese,"Penjing"...If so,I will be nice to him...if not..all bets are off...

Seriously,it probably is geographic dependent as to how well he would be received....We southerners are a weird and varied lot...except for me. LOL (I would welcome him,absolutely!!)...I reside in the great redneck state of Florida,by the way.(no,I'm not a redneck but I know a few)

As long as they are nice in return, there shouldn't be any problem.
