i am honestly not sure but i would get something just to be safe. just get something small so you can hide in a purse and if nobody else got them anything then you can always return it.

yes I would suggest you take a small gift and card...its polite even if they are not close friends. Your invited to an engagement dinner party that they are paying for so a small gift in return would be nice. Now on what type of present do you buy???? depending on finances .....bottle of wine or champagne would be good as you wouldnt really know their taste etc as you dont really know them well....good luck and enjoy the night :-)

Sugarpie is right. If you accept the invitation, you need to bring a gift. Nothing major, just something that shows you wish them well, since you will be expected to give a wedding gift as well (if you are invited to the engagement dinner, bet on being invited to the wedding).
A bottle of champagne would be appropriate, and a congratulatory card would be nice.

An engagement party is not a shower. You are not obligated to bring a gift.

Unless otherwise specified you should take a gift if your are going to attend. That is only the right thing to do. It does not have to be extravagant but it should be fairly nice.

Do the classy thing... I definitely would... but I wouldn't overspend. Maybe a picture album, a fancy candle, or a bottle of wine would be fine.
