You need to find a number that all of the denominators(bottom numbers) go into. Such as 36. Than multiply each fraction to make all denominators equal 36.

1/4=9/36
3/9=12/36
1/2=18/36

Than add all of the numerators(top numbers).

9+12+18=39

Turn it back into a fraction.

39/36

Simplify.

13/12=1 1/12

I hope that helps a little.

What did your teacher tell you to do when you want to add fractions?First thing is to find the lowest common denominator, Right? How do find this? By finding the lowest number which is divisible by 2, 4 and 9.It is not 9 because 2 and 4 don't divide into 9 evenly. It is not 18 because 4 doesn't divide into 18 evenly. It is not 27 because that is an odd number and 2 and 4 do not divide into 27 evenly. The next number is 36. the numbers 2,4,and9 divide into 36 evenly. Now you have to convert the three fractions into 36ths. 1/4 =?/36ths. 3/9ths = ?36ths? and 1/2= ? 36ths. When you add all the 36ths do you get 39/36ths? Now dividing the 39 by 36 and you have 1 and 3/36. Do you leave that as your answer? Dont you have to reduce the 3/36ths to the lowest denominator which is 12 because 3 goes into 36 twelve times? So the final answer should be 1 1/12th. See if that works.
