Nope.

If you want to drive, you need to have your license and insurance card.

If you want to buy booze you need proof of age.

If you want to go through airport security (or enter some other secure area) you need proof of ID.

But if you aren't doing any of those things (or are in the Military) you are not required to carry ID at all times.

No, it is not mandatory. But you should have some form of identification on you at all times. Identification is needed to cash a check, withdraw money from the bank, prove your age at a bar( unless you are old & it is evident), some schools want you to have a card that proves you have a right to be in that school, must have a license to drive a car & need a photo I.D. to vote. Identification in case you are found dead, would be helpful to police to inform someone of where to pick up the body! So, you see, it doesn't have to be mandatory, you just need it to do almost anything, even die!

I have to disagree with Citizen1984. The recent Supreme Court decision (Hiibel vs Nevada) upheld Nevada state law which requires you to identify yourself (state your name) on request to a police officer, but their law does not require that you carry identification papers so it was not an issue considered by the court.

There is no federal law requiring you to carry a form of ID in the US. Individual states may have their own requirements.

Yes. There was a supreme court case in the last few years stating you have to provide ID to peace officer if asked.

yes
Wow- four thumbs down for a simple "yes". If you are ever detained by the police for any crime and you have no ID, the police can arrest you. The police can not make you show an ID without a reason but you must have one on you or have one available IF they ask. For those of you that gave me the thumbs down, I give you one middle finger up.
