If you mean the math definition of average, its the sum (adding of numbers) of a group of numbers divided by the amount of numbers in that group. An example would be...

The average of 3 test grades: 80%, 76%, 100%

First you add all numbers up. 80+76+100= 256

Then divide by 3 because there were 3 numbers being added.
256/3= 85.3....%

There is a mathematical and statistical definition.
Otherwise, in scientific discussion, average would mean a typical or representative measure, one which is often observed. For example, if you were reporting some specific elemental content in lavas around the world, you could report an approximate central value as an average. Statisticians would not be happy with reporting it as a mean. This could because different analytical methods were used, sampling procedures differed from location to location, and some lavas are intriniscally different from others.

Which one? There are several types of averages.

The arithmetic mean is gotten by adding all the terms and dividing by the number of terms.
The median is the middle term, at least one-half the number of terms are equal to or larger and at least one-half are equal to or less.
The mode is the most common value. There may be more than one.
The geometric mean is the nth root of the product of n terms. It is said that a human is the geometric mean between an atom and the sun. You are as many times larger than an atom as the sun is larger than you.

There are others, but those are the most common.

Add all the values together. Then take that number and divide it by the number of values. That new number equals your mean (average).
