Modern Times? Michael Olowokandi and Kwame Brown. Look at their averages.
Wost ever?
LaRue Martin
A 6-foot-11 center out of Loyola (Illinois), LaRue Martin entered the NBA with much fanfare in 1972. Unfortunately, he never quite lived up to the hype, spending four seasons on the Portland Trail Blazers’ bench before retiring in 1976.
Martin set the basketball world abuzz when he outplayed Bill Walton in a game between Loyola and UCLA in 1971–72. The Portland Trail Blazers were so impressed that they made Martin the first overall pick in the 1972 NBA Draft.
However, Martin never caught on in the NBA, and after the Blazers drafted Walton in 1974, he never had the chance. In four seasons Martin never scored more than 7.0 points per game, and he never shot better than .452 from the field. He notched both of those numbers during the 1974–75 season, when Walton missed most of the year with injuries.
Martin retired in 1976, one year before the Blazers won their first NBA Championship. In four seasons he tallied 5.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

I agree...Olowokandi has to be one of the worst if not THE WORST overall first pick in the draft. Not only was he soft and slow, but look at all the players the Clips passed up on that year - Bibby, VC, Jamison, Paul Pierce, and Dirk to name a few. I'm sure the Clips still regret that pick even to this day.

First of all, let's give Oden a chance to prove himself. Secondly, no one thought Bowie rivaled the ability of Jordan. because they did not play the same position. The Trailblazers already had an SG in Clyde Drexler whom they got the previous year. That also meant that Jordan would've been riding the bench if they did draft him. Anyway, the worst number one draft pick is Kwame Brown.

Olowokandi is one of the worst but the worst is Sam Bowie beacuse they thought he would rival Michael Jordon in talent but was an waste of draft pick and MJ, you know who he became.

Olowokandi comes to mind, Oden may give him a run for the money as he may never play.

i would say micheal olowakandi at least kwame brown had talent. olowakandi was horrible, also olowakandi was picked ahead of some superstar players like carter, nowizki, pierce. Kwame's draft wasn't as strong.

Can't think of any first overall picks, but Sam Bowie has got be the worst pick ever. They picked him over M.J, and Samie was hurt most of the time, while M.J went on to create THE MJ.
