I don't know if it's not seeing somebody's full potential. That could be a long-term ignorance or simply short-sightedness. I think of it more as a prejudicial low expectation of things or people in a particular environment and coming upon an exception and actually seeing its or his or her higher potential in spite of the environment. This would, hopefully, remove the prejudice. But that's a paragraph. Not a word. Two words? Exceeding expectations? Maybe three? Greatly exceeding expectations? Perhaps "serendipitous"? Although I don't know if that has an exclusively positive meaning.
