The main "trick" of any reporter is developing contacts who trust him or her. A newsperson is only as good as his contacts. If this is done, writing a story is easy. However if one of your contacts gives you a tip concerning an upcoming event in confidence and you print it, you have violated a basic rule of jouralism and you soon will be slingin'burgers at McDonalds.

Don't do it out of spite, revenge or pride. I have seen a lot of disgusting verbal abuse, which I have reported. I have seen people threaten, which was reported by someone and I have seen the rantings of some obviously sick people which were also reported and rightfully so as they involved bestiality and children and killing and torture and perversity. Those things should be reported. But I have p....d off a few Americans just by making my views about the US foreign policy and gun laws
and my views on Bush known and they have reported me simply because they didn't like what I had to say and in no way was it offensive or abusive or profane, just my Canadian opinion.
Remember, yahoo doesn't actually look at what was said, they simply respond by deleting and if a user is complained about enough they will freeze the account. So report with your brain, not your emotion.

You know what? There are no tricks.
Your job is easy, as long as you don't try to make it hard. All you have to do is tell the story.
Make sure you're telling a factual story. Don't embellish.
Just tell the story.
