I think the platter offers your guests a little taste of different kinds of cheeses, whereas the ball offers only one kind. But that is entirely up to your discretion. Have fun!

A platter has more variety and will feed more people than a cheese ball.
But on the other hand i prefer the taste of a good cheese ball.
