What type/size bike would I be looking at for a 5 year old? He's 3 feet tall and about 35 pounds. Also for my other son; heis 13, about 5'6" and 140 pounds... they will both be learning/beginners... so I'm assuming durability would important.
Any suggestions on dirt bikes would be great!

Thanks to all who have answered thus far. For clarification.. the plan is not to set two boys "free" on motorized bikes... Myself and my husband both plan to get bikes and take lessons with our kids. And of course protective gear.. we plan to "play responsibly"

BS you can start riding at any age
start your 5 year old on a kdx 50 that is a kawiisaki their are other brand that have similar bikes. this bike is not to fast and a great beginer bike for young children. For the 13 year old get a TTR 125 it is 4 stroke and plenty or power for him but not to mutch. Ttrs are yamahas an very reliable and great learning bikes that can take abuse. Get all the protectiv gear the things that u rilly need is a helmet chest protector knee pads and boots. You dont have to get riding boots but durable boos and knee pads. get a good helmet dont get a cheep one trust me that is not something you wana go cheep on. Cheap helmeds can be breaken from falling on the ground i have 4 m2r helmets and they are the best helmets i have ever had i havent been able to break anyof them yet but they dont mak ethem anymore saddly.
sry for the huge letter but i like riding and i just start talkin an cant stop so hope this helps.
riding is a great way to spend time with the family you wont belive how mutch fun it is.

Do you want an honest answer? The five year old is much too young to be riding on a motorized vehicle which he will be handling alone and the 13 year old should earn all the money to purchase a bike. That age is also in the irresponsible stage. . Do not tell me that both boys are mature because they are not. You might want to look up the number of accidents and deaths from dirt bikes within your area. But you are the parent. You are putting your children at risk. That is your conscience you must live with..

a honda crf 50 for the little one and a crf80 for the older boy... hondas are really reliable and last forever.your 13 year old is gonna have to learn to use the clutch but the good thing is with they 2 bike is when the older boy out grows out of his bike the little one will just be about ready to ride it... you ccan get a 50 on craigs list for about 800 bucks and an 80 for about 1000. they were also called xrs before 2002...

hey everone my friend let his 4 year old race in races with other kids his age (3-6) year old and there was like 10 of them and it was the coolest thing ever. because they were not fast so if they were to fall then they most likley would not hurt themselves and if you put them in chest protectors and helmets they should be fine, get the small one a 50 and the big one a 180, get a yamaha because my dads friend has had one for 20 years and it still runs like brand new. but it is ok to get them one!!i learned at 5 and that is awesome because they can learn responsibility with riding it.

5 years is a perfect age to start a kid ridding. There are many good bikes for young kids but Honda offers the most diverse line up for kids hands down. For your 5 year old the Honda CRF50 would be perfect. For the 13 year old try the Honda CRF150F (not R). At 5'6" it should fit him just right. He will grow out of the 80 or 100 to quickly. You are choosing a great activity to get your kids in to.
