When the Civil War started, Lincoln tried to recruit General Robert E. Lee, but Lee refused to turn his back on his home state of Virginia, and went on to command the Confederate Army, and Lee was one of the best commanders the United States has ever seen IMO.

Lincolns first choice was General Robert E. Lee, but he decided to fight for the Confederacy after his home state of Virginia seceded from the Union. So Lincoln had to go with Sherman and Grant instead.

Lincoln's first choice was Robert E Lee who refused because hw would not turn the sword against Virginians. Lincoln then settle for McClellan, Hooker ,Pope , Meade, Burnside and Grant which finally helped Lincoln to defeat the Confederacy.
