I think it did poorly at the box office, and I've never heard anyone say anything good about it, yet everytime I come across it on television, I have to watch it, and I enjoy it.

Once you get used to the idea that it's a Laurel and Hardy movie, it's okay. It was stilted in a lot of places and some of the gags were drawn out too long.

But, there are still laughs to be gotten from it. And some of the action sequences are really funny. A director more in touch with the classics than Verbinski might have done a better job with it. The mandatory gags were there, but only Maury Chaykin and Vickie Lewis seemed to really get it.

Adam Rifkin's script originally had a bigger role for veteran character actor William Hickey, (The Father.) You have to wonder how much his death during filming screwed up the final production.

When I was a child, I watched it over and over....before my mum decided it was a terrible movie and locked it away in some unknown location. I recently recovered it in a drawer hidden in my grandmum's room, and watched it again. It was... interesting... I used to want to have a pet mouse just like the one in the movie, but then I realized that having a pet that clever would probably be terrifying, not to mention hard to keep in a cage...
I liked it well enough, I suppose. It's funny, and good on a hormonal day when you just want to laugh as Nathan Lane is beaten by a rodent.
