The thirteen colonies banded together to gain freedom from Britain. George Washington gave important direction in three principal areas:
1. He accepted the Presidency and fulfilled the obligations required by thew Constitution. Many people expected him to become a King or other person of royalty. He used his power of office but did not abuse it.
2. He kept the States united. The colonies joined together to fight Britain but did not originally have strong intentions of staying united.
3. He gave permanency to the country. Democracy was a new concept. Many of the leaders assumed that the country would only last a few years. Washington strongly believed that the United States was a long term solution.
Washington and his government encouraged the French Revolution but avoided becoming entangled in it.
Shay's Revolution was a battle against Revolutionary War veterans who believed that they should be given title to all of the land they farmed. Washington had a few of them hanged and that ended the matter.
