Try joining some clubs and being more active. You don't have to join a fraternity to meet people. You can join service clubs, organizations related to your major, an many others.

You're right on target about joining something. Sit down and make a list of the things you like to do. For example: do you play a musical instrument? a sport? chess? Are you studying a language? It would help if you could get a list of the clubs and teams at your school. Once you find something to join, you'll make friends almost immediately, because you'll be working together and so you'll have lots of stuff to discuss. Also, don't stay in your room; go to the library or to any place on campus where people gather. And finally, don't wait for people to talk to you; ask a classmate a question about something that went on in class; even if you know the answer, ask it anyway. It's an introduction to a conversation. If you don't want to ask a question, then make a comment: "Wasn't that lecture (interesting, boring, informative, etc.)? "I wonder what (he'll/she'll) ask on the exam?" Take the initiative and people won't ignore you. Good luck. We've all been through this.

yeah joining a frat or some kind of club is a definite great start cause that way you'll feel as if you belong to a group and you will. And as for making new friends the key is to smile, ALOT. Just be yourself and speak your mind and dont forget to smile.
