I am not a senior (44) but I get mine done yearly. I had a great aunt that lost both her breasts to cancer years ago (I think she was in her 60s, but I'm not sure)...but that is not considered a 'family history'. For it to be considered 'running in the family' you have to have several first-degree relatives that have it. I was diagnosed with stage 0 DCIS (breast cancer) this past August. My mammogram is what caught it, as it was too small to feel. I had a lumpectomy, 6-1/2 wks of radiation, and will start 5 yrs of hormone therapy after the first of the year. I'm a BIG advocate of regular mammograms. My baseline was done at age 38 because of having had a relative that had it (my doc chose to have it done before I hit 40...then from 40 onward it was done once a year). For the next couple of years, I'll be checked every 6 mos. If I remain cancer-free, I'll go back to having it done once a year.

What a hoot! Hey, Pat.moor! It's thanks for the mammaries!
Yes, when you're smaller, they squeeze and squeeze, trying to get something into the grip of those plates, usually ending with a big section of pectoral muscle. I had a funny experience at my last mammogram. The nurse gave me these little round band-aids, all Barbie pink and purple, with a little metal bead on them, which I had to stick on my nips. She said they were to make the X-Ray easier to read. I said that it made me feel like a stripper and suggested tassles. She said she had never heard that response before. Really? Am I the only one? I thought it was so funny.

You made me laugh. This is what they're like though. I think however that women with smaller breasts tend to have more pain. The one I had they just kept squishing my boob, asking if it hurt, and giving me funny looks when I said no.

Back in the good old days women got weekly preparations on laundry day -- they even joked about "getting your teat caught in a wringer".
