You have a modem, you need a modem and a router. Nice wireless router with some wired ports as well wil set you back maybe $60 for a good one, or $150 for a very nice 802.11n mimo system.
One you have that, you can split to as many computers as you want to.

as the guys have said, you would need a router.
the black thing connected now is the tv cable box with modem, this modem connects to your computer, though your computer would have it's own modem anyways.
since you are using a laptop as your second computer, you would be better off getting a WIFI router. You can connect your current black box connection to the router and connect another LAN cable to your computer and just use wireless WIFI for your laptop. Routers allows you to have multiple connections from your internet source. You can opt to get the lowest output connections available since you only have two computers in the house. But the cost might not be that significant for you so you can opt to get the 1x10 router which means you would have ten output connections available. You can have friends over and they can enjoy WIFI with you. Though having more computers on your router and with all of them connected to the internet might slow things a bit with your internet surfing.
I believe some routers nowadays are less than US$30. Depending on the brand and where you buy it.
good luck and hope this helps.

What you will need to get is a router. The "black thing" that you now have is the cable modem. You can connect a router to the cable modem and then connect different computers to the router. With a wireless router and wireless cards in the laptops and desktops you will not even need a physical cable (Cat 5e or Cat 6 )to connect to the Internet.
The router will come with software that makes it fairly easy to set up and use. You can also ask for assistance here, if need be.

You need to buy a router. A wireless Linksys is preferable. There should be a cable connecting your "black box" to your computer. The router will come with another wire. You will unplug the wire from your computer. Plug it into the router in the designated uplink port. Plug the other wire into one of the remaining four ports and plug the other end into your computer. There should be directions when you get a router. They should be self explanatory.

the tv cable is called a coax cable. It connects to your modem. You need a router so that both can connect to you router. A good wireless router is the Lynksis wireless g WRT54G or WRT54GS (if you have many computer(It has speed booster)) . A cheaper and easier but not as strong is the belkin wireless F5D7230-4

you have the old coax cable system.
Your laptop will not have coax
therefore time to upgrade to a router using cat5 cable
cable is faster than wireless and better if you share a printer.
TIP, contact your ISP provider because if you get a router from them they will set it up over the phone for you
what you need is a wireless router that plugs into the phone line, a network printer that plugs into the router, then set up both computers and printer to a home network
