I am on my to Naples Italy. However my flight arrives in London Heathrow and my other flights departs out of London Gatwick. I would like to use the public tranportation since I have a day there to see some of the major sights( in particular " Big Ben " ) . Is this possible to do?

Can someone give me a run down on pricing between the 2 airports using the Metro system. Could I purchase an all day pass? I have read about the "Oyster Card" but since I am only going to be there 1 day I don't think this is economical.

What stations do I have to transfer at?

Your advice is very appreciated =) !!! Thanks !!! =)

Take the Piccadilly Line underground to Hammersmith. Do a cross platform change to the District Line. This will take you to Westminster. You will now be next to the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. The London Eye is straight across the River Thames. From Westminster, Trafalgar Square is a 5 minute walk and Buckingham Palace another 5 minutes. From Trafalgar Square you can catch a No 15 bus which will take you past St Paul's and on to the Tower of London.
From the Tower make your way to London Bridge Station 10 minute walk along the Thames. You can catch a train from there to Gatwick.
Will you have any luggage ? You don't really want to carry cases around with you. Most main-line train stations have a left luggage office. Charges are £6 per item per 24 hours.

Fares
Heathrow - Westminster £4
Bus £2 per journey
An one day off-peak (after 9:30) ticket with unlimited travel on Underground and Bus is £6.70. This will not cover all of the journey to Gatwick. When you buy your ticket for the train to Gatwick, tell them you have a zone 1-6 Travelcard and they will only charge you the extra.

Barry's answer is very good but there is one point I want to clarify. The all-day tube pass comes in 2 versions--peak travel time and off-peak travel time. If you don't leave the airport until after 9:30 AM then you can get an off-peak travel card for zones 1-6 and you will pay 6.70 (pounds). If you want to board the tube before 9:30 you have to buy the more expensive version and it costs 13.20 (pounds). Once you have your ticket it is good on the underground, the busses and Docklands light rail.
If you are confused about what to buy when you reach London you can ask an Underground employee. I have always found them to be very helpful in helping figure out the best pass for my needs.
To reach Gatwick airport you need to take a regular train, not the tube. Take the tube to Victoria and get the train from there. They have a service called "Gatwick Express". I think it costs about 15 pounds. You can also take a regular train--they take a little longer and cost a little less. Just make sure the one you board actually stops at the airport. It's about a 30-40 minute train ride to Gatwick.

An excellent answer from Barry - but can I just clarify that the underground (metro to you) does NOT go to Gatwick - as Barry says you need to get to Victoria train station and catch an overground main line train
