some do and some don't... the most popular degree is in "Theater Arts" which covers acting, producing, and directing...

Some actors do and some do not. You do not have to have a degree in acting to be a flim/TV star. However, if you do go to acting school and obtain a degree, while slightly increasing your chances, will not necessarily mean you instantly become a movie star. First of all, you'll need a good agent (person who finds auditions and sends in your portfolio). Well, actually, first you'll need to build your portfolio. Start small with traveling theatre troupes or small commercials. Then look for an agent who will best represent you. Look for one who is big, but not too big. Besides being expensive, large acting agency companies have many clients to think about. Once you find an agent, good luck; it's a cruel business and it's really tough to make your "big break".

You don't technically need any classes at all, all you need is talent. What classes and college/universities do for you is mostly give you a good 'reputation' kind of. It's helpful if they see that you graduated from a certain arts school. And the school will help you put together a compilation of your work (like a resume). Acting classes can be helpful though, especially if you're better at learning through being taught rather than through experience. It also depends on what kind of acting you mean. Stage acting, you should probably take classes. They teach you how to stand and position yourself and many other things. Film acting, like tv or movies, I think would be easier to learn just through experience. Or if you have a problem with a certain aspect of acting then classes definitely help that. But if you have talent, just go to open auditions. Even if you're just in a commercial or something, it gives you something to put on your resume so you can hopefully get bigger roles as you go!

ehh, it just depends on how the actor gets discovered for acting calls.

i think that if you're looking into theater (stage) acting, you need to have a background on theater education... i think that casting directors look for that background experience.

film acting is different. basically, anyone that is able to go to a casting call is qualified as a potential for the film... that doesn't mean that anyone can get into a cast, but I mean that I don't think you necessarily HAVE to have a background in acting to get called for a movie.

IN RESPONSE TO YOUR ADDITIONAL NEW QUESTION:
not necessarily. Acting is a cruel profession. A lot of modern acting jobs have to do with how you look- down to the small details- how you sound, how your NAME sounds, your ethnic background, etc. It's really hard to get a job in theater, because so many people want to get into theater (if it wasn't so difficult, I'd be in theater for the rest of my life too.) Why do you think that class C actors (actors that have not starred in anything) make very little money! There's no need for so many actors!

No necessarily. And getting a degree does not help. Casting people do not care if you have a degree, they only care first, if you look the part, and second, if you can act the part.
