Well, a number of things going on here:
1) somebody, whether it's you or not, NEEDS to have a wireless router or access point. They are cheap. You can get one for $40. I'm not trying to waste your time. It's a fact. wireless connection =- wireless router or access point.

2) Just because A network isn't encrypted doesn't mean it isn't secured. Likely the networks you are trying to connect to are either too weak to get a steady stream from, or secured using MAC address filtering.

3) you want internet when it is not plugged in. You could do what I did. Talk to a neighbor, and get their encryption key.... or just fork for a cheap access point, encrypt it, then bring it with you in your bag. then you can park that in a router, and only you can use it.

You are not ready for wireless yet. There is a network structure you have to understand for you to get wireless networking to work, it isn't "just there"

At the top there is an ISP, or Internet Service Provider. They are a hub for the internet, and dish out IP addresses loaned to them. IP addresses are like a street address for your computer on the internet.

The ISP sends a signal (like comcast, or verizon DSL, or fiber) to your house (or your neighbors) with a single IP address. A router takes that IP address, and uses it as a hub to send information out from, and recieve information into. Kind of like your mailbox. All the mail goes in and out through that one box, but you can get letters just the same as your mom and dad, all from that one box.

A router "stamps the mail" with "Who gets the message"
and sends that signal accross a wired or wireless network.

If a network isn't secured, it could be very dangerous. Viruses are common on unsecured networks.

Even most "non secured" networks still require a log-in.

BUT...

If you had a neighbor who had a wirless router that was "un secured" and you have a wireless adapter for your laptop, you would just join the network.

However, you can restrict who gets the mail by limiting it at the mailbox. (the router) It would be like putting a sign on the mailbox that says "only put mail for Me in this box, my parents no longer live here" The mailbox then only lets messages through that are directed to you. This is called mac address filtering. A network can be wide open, but if your computers mac address doesn't match, you don't get access.

I hope this helps you!

All computers can access wireless networks, not just laptops...
Your dad could get a wireless router and then some wireless network adapter for all computers in the household (desktop and laptop). You could get cheap USB adaptors.

Hi Miranda,

Your requirement has few assumptions and limitations.

I assume that you do not want to hook up to your dad's office setup because may be he has a proxy which filters many websites ;) and u want to browse them.

One option is your mobile phone with a data plan can be useful.

1. Phones like Nokia/Samsung come with modem driver which you can install on your laptop and browse internet with data plan on your phone with a data cable (USB) connecting the phone to your notebook

2. If you use a BlackBerry or iPhone which work on Bluetooth, you can use our built-in bluetooth (if available) or buy a cheap ($15-$20) bluetooth adapter. Then your wireless phone's GPRS/EDGE data connection can be used to browse internet

so there are options but may be expensive .... i use the second option personally with my BB 8800

To connect to somebody else's wireless without their consent is illegal. The fines run to thousands, and you can get up to 5 years in prison. Also once you get a connection to an unsecured network, the only kind you can connect to, all your transactions including emails, downloads, passwords and user names are open to anyone with a wireless machine to read.

If you want internet just connect the ethernet cable to your laptop. If there are not enough cables you must get a network hub and expand one more line to your laptop. If you don't want cables you have to get a wireless. Thats your only choice.
