Finals week is next week in my university. i take 5 classes. i'm only going to have one final exam. The rest of the courses i have a final paper to write. In all, i have to write over 60 pages. Isn't that a little too much? For a final paper, 4 of my professors are asking us to write a final paper consisting of 13-15 pages instead of a final exam. The final paper is not optional.

If it were optional, which would you choose? The final paper consisting of 13-15 pages or the final examination and why?

For me, I'll rather have a final paper, its less pressure for me than an unexpected content for an exam.

I would choose the final paper consisting of the 13 - 15 pages for two reasons. A great chance to find out about my creative talent and two, I would be more likely to pass with a higher grade. When a person is not "put on the spot" that is what a final exam with multiple choice answers would do to us and that would create tension and fear automatically most likely causing more wrong answers to be submitted on the other hand a final paper would set the stage for relaxation because we feel trusted to say things the way we choose and that always goes for a higher final grade!

I would go for the final paper. When writing a paper, you can take the time to think about the topic, outline it, and insert the content. I suspect that the final paper was indicated in the syllabus, so there was time to do the research before the last week. A final exam requires you to memorize, and when you have a number of subjects, it is too hard and stress makes it even worse.

A paper, definitely, length notwithstanding.
A paper doesn't present the same sort of stress (to me, anyway) as an exam. For a start, you have a lot more time to prepare it. You can use any and all material. (You don't have to cram all that information into your head.) And, presumably, you have some leeway and choice with the topic (rather than being restricted to two or four essay questions on a final exam).
Good luck! (And be happy your exams are done before the holidays so you can kick back. My daughter is stuck studying for exams which begin in January.)

I could probably write 15 pages on a final exam - wait - I'm pretty sure I did. A few times. And that's putting someone on the spot! I'd go with the paper. You can add quotes and references to back up the BS instead of trying to remember it all in an hour and get your point across.

An exam over a paper any day. A final exam is usually comprehensive and cannot focus on any unit of the class very deeply. A paper can take twice as long to research, write and edit, and it is much more detailed on one subject.

I'd take the paper any day over an exam.

I assume you get some time to write the paper? You never know what questions are going to appear on the exam.

I had a grad level class once that had four papers, no quizes, no tests, the final paper was "Here are two questions, choose one, write a paper supporting your answer, you have three hours, go." The only A+ I have ever received.

I'd choose the paper because, although it's time consuming, it give me control over the information, and I choose when to to do and how long it will take me to do it. I also love to write. So, for me, it's fun!

I, too, have final papers instead of final exams. (Well, in one class I only have a final exam with a two-hour time limit.)

The final exam means you get the whole ordeal over with in a faster and tidier way.

I tend to get way too elaborate with my papers.

However, when I get stressed out, I tend to forget factual information. If I had tons of other papers and only one exam, I would be afraid of flubbing the exam, especially if it were some humanities thing like history or english. Hence I would choose the paper, even though that would mean more work.

I'm taking 5 classes and I had to write 3 papers and take finals. I know if I had a choice, I'd go with the final. I hope you have something interesting to write about. Good luck to you.

I've thought about this a lot. In general I get better grades on papers than on multiple choice types tests. I do about the same on papers and essay tests. But papers do take FOREVER.

So I guess I'd take an essay test over a paper but a paper over a multiple choice test...I guess.

I only have one final left! All 4 of my papers are done (which was also about 60 pages.) GOOD LUCK :)
