I work at a clothing shop as a casual employee, and when other workers call in sick (which happens to be often) I get called 2 hours before the shift and asked if I can work it.

Do I HAVE to work the shift? My Employer gets really angry at me when I dont- yet I always attend my rostered shifts EVERY time.

If you want to stay on your boss' good side you do. After all he is the one that can fire and replace you.

What do you mean Casual Employee?

If you were hired to cover shifts of others then yes, it is your job.

If you were hired as a regular employee with regular shifts, then yes they may call you to ask if you can cover a shift. The answer to your question is (in this case) No.

You are NOT legally bound to work a shift that you were not scheduled to work. It is against the law for him to state otherwise.

If you go in (depending on the state, most states) you must be paid for a four hour shift if you are sent home, due to employer decision.

But as for being called in to work someone elses shift and if it is not part of your job, then no, you are not required by law to work other's shifts.

This one is a no brainer -- You were obviously HIRED as a replacement when people call in sick. Be thankful you are getting ANY hours as LOTS of people out there would crawl over you to get them.

For the life of me, I cannot understand WHY someone would not want those hours

Unless it was a condition of your employment you don't. I have a similar situation, and can take or refuse any additional shifts, that I'm not scheduled for. This may cause them to be shorthanded, but it is the way our scheduling is set up.

You don't HAVE to, but if you don't, they don't have to schedule you for ANY shifts. To put it another way, refusing to work when called could result in not having a job.

NO you do not!!! I used to work at Walgreens and they tried pulling that same crap. And then they get all pissed off at you like your supposed to drop everything and come in. Don't worry. You do not need to come in. Only if you want to. You shouldn't cancel all your plans in the last minute to cover for someone else that didn't come in. Let the boss be mad at the people that didn't come in instead of you.

no technically you do not have to work, if its that late notice.
however, you say your employer ets angry if you dont so if you want to keep your job and stay in the good books its probably best to work.

You don't have to but looks good when a higher position opens up and if do decide to take a day off your self they shouldn't thank any thing of it

Not sure if you signed any kind of contract. If so, it might be outlined in there.

If not, no, not obligated. Be apologetic and understanding of the employer's frustration but you are not responsible for those shirking their duties.

hey, even if you can make it in half the time for others absenteeisms, your employer should be happy. inform them that you have a life outside of work
