there's this early 90's BMW in town for sale for $2,000 the person told me it runs fine. but I heard from alot of ppl that foreign cars like those are expensive to repair if you have to buy parts, but I heard they're well made cars where they don't need repaing much at all especially if you take good care of it, I have like $1000 saved up for a car and my parents are gonna give $1000, and I plan on saving a little more for the whole taxes and stuff.basically wondering if it's a good idea for a 19 year old girl to get as her first car?

Don't be afraid to buy the BMW.. In general, replacement parts are cheaper than for Fords or other American cars. It only depends on where you shop!! BMW's are very reliable and will usually last as long as the owner's willingness to learn about them. This is a good car for you because it is safe for inexperienced drivers. Always check out the crash tests in the NHTSA web-site. Keep the engine clean, inside and out, use synthetic oil every time, The worst part of any car is usually the labor involved to fix 'em. Try to find someone locally that you can trust to inspect the car and not B.S. you.. A properly maintained "bimmer" should last for hundreds of thousands of miles, and ordinarily need only brake pads and tires. Preventative maintenance is everything. Use only BMW anti-freeze, never mix it with the "green" stuff. Happy motoring!!!

BMWs are great cars and the early 90s cars represent great value for money.

I strongly suggest you get to know some people on forums for your model car, they a valuable source of information.

Some parts are cheap some are expensive.
Through the magic of the internet you can shop around. I'm in Australia and I buy some parts in the US and some parts here.
Steve Haygood is amongst the cheapest around and will give you excellent advice.
I'm guessing you're looking at an E36.

www.realoem.com lists parts for all BMWs and gives an approximate price for the part at a dealer.
You get the part number from realoem then go to Pelican Parts, the link is on the realoem website, or Steve Haygood and get a decent price.

Short answer: no, the parts aren't too expensive.

Here's the main issue: repair shops and specialists will milk you for all you are worth. It's commonly referrred to as "BMW Syndrome" ( a similar moniker exists for Mercedes and Porsche). They think you're loaded just because of the emblem above your grill. Meet a nice mechanic who specializes in BMW's and get to know him well. This will prevent people from taking advantage of you. However, parts do generally seem to be more expensive, maybe by at least 10% the cost of a regular car.

Then don't buy either of the two. A Toyota will work. Better yet buy a 1998 to 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with the stock super charger. More bang for the buck, they don't need a lot of maintenance, and parts are not expensive if needed. Best car I've owned and I've had quite a few rides!

Parts are not expensive, but you have to know where to get parts from. Regardless of make & model of car, if you pickup the parts from the dealer, it will be expensive.

It is nice car, but I don't think BMW is NOT good as your first car. Besides the parts, you have to think about labor expense for repair. BMW is easy car to maintain & fix, but is also little bit different compare to other cars. So little things like oil change, you will have to get it done in BMW dealer or import specialist repair shops. If you don't have connections or know how to work around it, it will cost you.
