Well, here's my 2 cents worth. First of all, they will say '573' or so power! That means real big magnification. Right? The problem is with that much power, The image is really grainy and dark and you want be able to keep it in view because the more you magnify an object in space, the quicker it moves. You magnify both the object and the speed it is going because of the earth's rotation. They have motorized equipment to take car of this but they are expensive. I would get an relative non expensive telescope to start with first than move up if you are still interested. You won't see images like those found in astronomy mags. thou. Most all of those pictures are from the observatories on mountains and most are time exposures. Also make sure it comes with a really good tripod It doesn't matter how good a telescope is, If it is on a flimsy, shaky tripod. You won't want to use it. A good steady tripod is 50% of a telescope.

Water Skipper gave good points but one point that I have to respectfully disagree. Religion does not conflict with astronomy. As a born again christian I think astronomy is wonderful and unless someone is speaking philosophically, the issue of God will not come into play. It is plane to see that the universe is at least 14 billion years old and that our current solar system is at least 5 billion years old.
But, sorry I sidetracked myself. Water skipper is right about the misuse of a telescope. May I suggest you learn to study the stars with the naked eye, then move on to binoculars before venturing out on a telescope.
The effect it can have on you is that you will be an awe of the planets once you see them with a telescope. The planet Saturn is always a treat to see no matter which way the rings are lined up. If you want to view the moon, I suggest having a filter on the eyepiece. It will hurt the eyes looking with a telescope.

bad costly
good great fun and entertainment

i have a $7000.00 telescope and it is so fun i can see all of the planets and it has a gps in it to show where star formations are like the big dipper.

warning: do not buy any telescope. the telescopes for $100 are good buy for kids and not very good. if buying a telescope check the optical zoom not the digital zoom. and check the lense before you buy you might need a stronger lense to view all the planets and other solar systems.
mine has 56 optical zoom with gps and i bought the recorder to record everything it is great.

optical zoom is real zoom digital zoom is streching the picture up and down to make it look like you are zooming in and it make the pictures into squares .

also never look at the sun or moon it permanetly harms your eyes.
