first sub. y from both sides

so 3= y-1

now add 1 to both sides.

so 4 = y

Key is to combine and then isolate

y + 3 = 2y -1
y = 2y -4
-y = -4
y = 4

Check
4+3 = 2(4) -1
7 = 7 YES!

3=y-1
