DO NOT GET BEHIND. This will give you a step up from a lot of people in your classes.

-Study for every class, don't just study for the tests and quizzes.
-Read all of the recommended reading.
-Don't be afraid of going in for extra help (ie tutors)
-Don't be afraid of seeing you professors at his or her office hours.

I would go to class, write out the notes as the prof spoke (even though they often would provide handouts of their notes, or eventually provided power point presentations). I found writing out the notes helped. At the end of the day, I would stay at the university with a group of friends - there were always the same people in the food court at the end of the day - most of the 'regulars' became good friends of mine. Having these friends was a great source of support because they all wanted to do well in school too, so we kept each other motivated to work. Anyway, each evening I would work on papers and labs (I was in science so there were lab assignments to do). I would also write out my notes again (sometimes I would do a couple of days worth of notes at once so I wouldn't necessarily do this every day - it also depended on what assignments I had to do). When mid term exams and finals came around, I was usually pretty prepared. I would start going over my notes about 2 weeks before finals started, and I would actually make up little question sheets for myself. Some of my good study friends took some of the courses with me so, although we would study alone, if any of us had questions, we could take a little break and talk about the question together. It was great! I actually miss those years.

When you are in undergrad, don't stress yourself out too much! Make sure that you get out with your friends occasionally. I found that a lot of people in my first and second year courses ended up dropping out because they partied too much. That said, don't study EVERY night!!! You need to keep a balance!

Have fun and good luck with college!

Cheers

EDIT: someone mentioned going and talking to profs! Definitely! That is a great idea. I taught ecology and vertebrate anatomy at my university and the students who came for clarification generally did far better than those who were apathetic!

You have 3 choices:

1) STUDY, STUDY, and... STUDY. No social life. No parties.
2) Party all the time and study all the time, never get sleep again.
3) If you're unsure of how to manage time, you could always ask the tutoring center or something like that for extra help.

Best of luck! :)

Start early. Don't wait for the end of the term to study and do term papers. Participate in class discussions. Get enough sleep, and eat healthy foods. Also, don't forget to use your college library and to ask the reference librarians questions.
